BREED Excellence finalists announced

BREED has announced the finalists for their 2012 Awards for Excellence.

The 17 finalists have each won a category of the 2012 vocational education training (VET) awards and will be vying for the title of 2012 Student of the Year at an award ceremony November 13, at Blacktown City Council.

Winners are selected on criteria of employability skills and determined by a BREED committee in consultation with schools and employers.

Skills assessed are: communication, team work, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organisation, self-management, learning and technology.

The 2012 Student of the Year will be announced before a distinguished group, including: family members, school principals, TAFE and Blacktown business and civic leaders.

Vocation Education and Training provides year 11 and 12 students with valuable skills while they are still at school and provides the student with a Certificate II or III when the course is completed.

VET helps students get a head start in building their careers. Having an extra qualification when leaving school, is a great advantage when students apply for a job or further education. The students come from 20 High Schools in the Blacktown Region.

BREED works with the business community to place over 3,000 students into work placement across 14 vocational framework groups each year.

VET award categories include: Business Services, Information Technology, Café Skills, Commercial Cookery, Entertainment, Tourism, Primary Industries, Construction, Metals and Engineering, Retail, Automotive, Financial Services, Health Services Assistance and Electro-technology.

BREED Managing Director Stephen Frost said the BREED Awards for Excellence are important to the students for winning their categories and also because the region’s local talent and future workforce is recognised.
