WESTERN SYDNEY TRANSFORMED

Autumn festival of colur and culture

HIGH streets and town centres across Western Sydney will come alive with colour and culture in a series of autumn street parties which will boost local economies.

Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the NSW Government was working with the 13 councils most impacted by the 2021 Covid lockdowns to support their recovery through the Open Streets program.

“The NSW Government’s investment has already resulted in tens of thousands of people turning out to 25 streets and laneways in suburbs which include Burwood, Auburn and Parramatta and I look forward to seeing that continue in May,” Mr Stokes said.

“The foot traffic these parties create supports local businesses as they recover from the pandemic with 54 per cent of businesses surveyed in the City of Sydney reporting an increase in sales during events on their doorsteps.”

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said more than 20 urban centres across Greater Sydney have been opened to the community since December as part of the program which includes grants of up to $500,000.

“It’s a great time of year for the people of New South Wales to get out in their communities and enjoy live music, entertainment, outdoor dining and markets as well as connect with each other,” Mr Ayres said.

“We’re enabling Councils to revitalise their laneways, streets and squares to help local economies and the hospitality, arts, and music sectors to get back on their feet as well as creating a sense of excitement.”

Open Streets is part of the NSW Government’s $66M Alfresco Restart Package which aims to boost economic recovery and support community wellbeing.
