Holroyd Police will be joining Council as part of operation ‘Street View’ which will see officers target anti-social behaviour, personal safety in the CBD and alcohol-related crime.
This high visibility operation will also see the Police joining up with and supporting local Council Officers in their litter education campaign.
The month-long trial, funded by a $10,000 State Government grant, will see 'litterbugs' issued with a warning before an infringement notice for dropping rubbish in the Merrylands Town Centre.
"Residents and business owners are warned to dispose of their rubbish responsibly," said Holroyd City Mayor Greg Cummings.
"We want to get the message out there that it is an offence to throw a cigarette butt or chewing gum on the ground.
"Offenders could face fines ranging from $80 for littering small items to $500 for general littering or items thrown from vehicles.
"Last year, residents identified Merrylands CBD as a problem area for littering in a Council survey with cigarette butts and chewing gum identified as the most littered items observed in the Town Centre.
