A strong Holroyd Council campaign has seen 6828 people sign their support at www.handsoffholroyd.com.au
The campaign is centred around council amalgamation plans that could see Holroyd swallowed up by Parramatta, Auburn and Ryde councils.
"The message is loud and clear – the community won’t stand by and watch the Baird Government wipe Holroyd off the map," Mayor Greg Cummings said.
"More and more residents and business owners are getting worried about how their daily services will suffer if Holroyd is forced to merge with Auburn, Ryde and Parramatta
councils.
"We've heard of residents walking around the neighbourhood with petitions, business owners talking to their customers and community service providers taking them to
Christmas parties to get those much-needed signatures of support.
"They’re actively getting involved in the campaign, standing up for Holroyd and standing up to Mike Baird – telling him that Holroyd must remain an independent local
government area.”
Clr Cummings said the creation of a “super council wöuld severely impact on Holroyd’s long list of community services and could result in an estimated 400 local job losses.
"If Holroyd is forced to merge, there will be no such thing as local, when it comes to services or “council-related issues," he explained.
"Our chambers will be based somewhere like Parramatta, rather than here in Merrylands, making it harder for mums and dads to get the answers they need from council.
"That means crucial, every day services like our free immunisation programs for children will also be at risk, given Auburn and Parramatta don’t provide them."
