These students are required to undertake a mandatory 35-hour industry work placement each year to apply their class room learning in the workplace and gain practical experience, skills and knowledge in the industry.
According to the managing director of BREED, Stephen Frost, there has been an increase in the number of students staying at school to year 12 with many selecting the option of obtaining an industry recognised national qualification as part of their HSC.
BREED is an independent not-for-profit organisation, working with youths to improve their year 12 attainment and their transition to post school education, training and employment.
This year BREED will facilitate around 4,000 work placements requiring the support of local businesses to assist the students meet this mandatory component of their course.
“There has been a significant increase in the number of students studying IT and Financial Services” Mr Frost said.
“In our peak week we need 60 IT placements and 32 financial services placements. With Western Sydney being the power house of the NSW economy this should be possible, but we need the support of our local businesses to achieve it.”
BREED’s mission is to provide experiences that strengthen a person’s employment opportunities and has been doing this for over 20 years. BREED works predominantly within two sectors, which are:
- The youth sector - BREED works with education, business and the general community to improve students’ year 12 attainment or equivalent, which radically improves their transition to post school education, training and/or employment.
- New and developing Business - BREED provides a low cost and supportive office environment in which business can start-up and/or continue to develop, become entrepreneurial and expand their customer base.
